After years building ecommerce tools at Shoprocket and running competition sites ourselves, we knew the industry deserved better. So we built it.
Basecomp started the way most good products do: out of frustration. The two Ryans first worked together at Shoprocket, building ecommerce infrastructure used by thousands of merchants. When we started running competition sites on the side, we quickly realised we were spending more time fighting our tools than growing our business.
Every draw meant exporting spreadsheets, manually generating random numbers, and hoping customers trusted the process. Every new raffle meant wrestling with WooCommerce plugins that weren't designed for competitions. Every compliance check meant digging through scattered documentation.
At the same time, we saw our customers increasingly demanding more transparency in how draws were run. They wanted proof, not promises. And no solution on the market could deliver that.
We knew there had to be a better way. So we built it.

We built it to run our own competition site
WinWink is a UK prize competition site, and it was our first customer long before it was anyone else's example. It started on WordPress, held together with plugins that were never designed for competitions: ticket numbering that drifted, draws run by hand, and a payment stack that took a cut of every order.
Every fix we made for WinWink turned into a piece of Basecomp. Sequential tickets that cannot be reordered. Instant wins committed before a single ticket is sold. A draw anyone can check for themselves. A free platform, so a good month never costs more to run than a quiet one.
WinWink still runs on Basecomp, and so does Rare Candy Raffles. When something is painful for them, it is painful for us on the same day, and it gets fixed. That is the whole reason the platform looks the way it does.
